Salary: $104.84 – $120.00 per day (commensurate with certifications and experience)
Nature and Scope:
Lifeguard Counsellors provide frontline lifeguarding and swim safety for Camp Thunderbird’s waterfront programming. As part of their role, the Lifeguard Counsellor will also lead groups of campers in an instructor/counsellor capacity and perform maintenance/janitorial duties ensuring the Camp Thunderbird site is able to accommodate all users. Successful applicants for these positions are generally experienced camping staff with Y camping or other related backgrounds.
This position requires the ability to solve problems, make decisions, and apply critical thinking. A flexible attitude combined with a willingness to adapt oneself to a fast-paced environment is also required. In addition, a dedication to the inclusion model of integration is required. A willingness to work a flexible schedule is required as shifts may vary and typically include evenings and weekends. Please note that as Camp Thunderbird is a residential camp, staff are required to stay at the camp overnight (in rustic accommodations) to support participants in extended programs.
This casual/seasonal position is entitled to an individual YMCA-YWCA membership and 4% vacation pay.
Adhere to YMCA Camping, Swim to Survive, and BCCA accreditation standards in program and service delivery
In cooperation with senior staff, deliver staff training and in-service for waterfront operations, safety protocols and emergency procedures
Promote, incorporate and role model the YMCA-YWCA core values in all program activities
Deliver Outdoor Education programs which provide participants with challenges, develop new skills, and increase environmental awareness and appreciation
Create and present programming and lessons
Organize and instruct group activities and games, create lesson plans, teach skills such as canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, SUP, archery, orienteering, teambuilding and low ropes, and lead songs and skit at campfires; adjust programs and make changes as required
Ensure the safety of all participants
Demonstrate, promote and role model exceptional interpersonal skills, and a love of working with children and youth
Assist with other camp related duties, which will include the maintenance of site and equipment, kitchen duties, tidying, cleaning and janitorial work. All instructors will share this work as equally as possible.
National Lifeguard Certification current for duration of programming season required
Current Standard First Aid and CPR C required
Completed High School with post-secondary education/courses an asset
A clean Police/RCMP Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required
Current Wilderness First Aid an asset, but not required
Canoeing, Kayaking, Rock Climbing certifications an asset, but not required
