Head Instructor/Head Lifeguard
Downtown Victoria YMCA-YWCA

Placement: February 2018
Salary: $19.26/hour
Regular Shifts:
Thursdays 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Saturdays 9:30am – 12:30pm
Substitute Shifts: Tuesdays 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Sundays 1:00pm – 3:30pm

Nature and Scope:
The Head Instructor/Head Lifeguard will assist in supervision of and participate in instruction of aquatic swim classes, lifeguarding and fitness programs. Reporting to the Aquatic Coordinator/Aquatic Team Leader, the Head Instructor/Head Lifeguard will be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the day-to-day activities on the pool deck, the quality of aquatic programs and the maintenance and cleanliness of the aquatic facility during their scheduled shift[s].

 Ensure programs start and finish on time and provide appropriate setup/take down as required.

 Ensure instructors and lifeguards are providing consistent and high quality swim instruction and lifeguarding

 Ensure instructors complete and maintain various required documentation

 Monitor commitment to service excellence by role modelling and maintaining YMCA SAM 2.1 standards.

 Direct delivery of programs and classes as appropriate

 Adhere to YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures


 Minimum 1-year relevant leadership experience

 Minimum 1-year experience lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons

 Experience teaching aquatic fitness is an asset

 Excellent customer service skills

 Strong computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and a registration software preferred

 Excellent oral and written communication skills

 Current certification of the following certifications:

o Standard First Aid and CPR-C

o National Lifeguard certification – pool or waterpark option

o YMCA Swim Instructor certification (or equivalent)

o LS Lifesaving Instructor certification

o YMCA or BCRPA Aquatic Fitness an asset and will be required (training will be provided)

 A clear Police/RCMP Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening required
