When phoning potential employers, have you had too many short rejections to your question if they have work available? It may all be in the technique. Consider developing a 15 to 60-second commercial to introduce yourself to potential employers.

A commercial to use on telephone calls should be as short as 15 seconds, while you should have a more comprehensive 60-second commercial to use in response to interview questions like "Tell me about yourself".

Don't lose your listener's attention by giving an overly-detailed, rambling reply. Thoughtfully-prepared, succinct commercials are more likely to capture attention and create interest in your skills and background.

In a potentially tense situation, such as interviews, your commercial can give you a comfortable place to start. Practice saying it to yourself in the mirror, and watch for distracting habits.

Your commercial should include the following:

  • A description of yourself as a person
  • Examples of the kind of work you have done
  • Your skills which are relevant to the job
  • The type of job you are looking for now
Here are some examples:

For the telephone:

"Hello, my name is __________________. I have 5 years' experience in finishing carpentry, using power tools safely, and use of shop woodworking equipment. I'd like to ask if you have any positions available."

For an interview:

"I have 14 years experience in retail sales including management and supervisory positions. I have full knowledge of shipping and receiving, inventory, and stock control. I have taken professional development courses in hiring and selection techniques, and how to be an effective manager. I enjoy the retail field mainly because I am a real people person. In fact, I was recently awarded as Best Associate Manager by the regional sales director."
